A Companion Print to
Mother Carey’s Chickens
Mother Carey’s Chickens is a tale of home, and here on the porch of the yellow house you can almost feel the late summer warmth in the long shadows as Nancy Carey reads a letter just arrived in the evening post.
Behind the Scene
Evening Post was featured in the January-February 2001 issue of The Storybook Home. In an article entitled “Evening Post: A Picture of Home,” Al Young talks about some of the significant aspects of the image. For example:
The woman, receiving whatever message it is in the newly opened letter, holds on to home itself as is so often the case with news and doings in the wider world. Wherever there is home to cling to, there is hope of stability, and so the gesture of her grasp on the porch post may be the most significant element in the composition.
