And whoso treasureth up my word, shall not be deceived, for the Son of Man shall come...

Joseph Smith Matthew 1:37

The story behind Treasure The Word

During the reign of righteous King Josiah, the Temple was cleansed after long years of idolatry and apostasy.  During this time the "book of the law of the Lord given by Moses" was discovered by the prophet Jeremiah's father, Hilkiah (2 Chronicles 34:14).  Upon its discovery, this book (or scroll) was read to the king, who greatly mourned because the people had not been living true to its teachings.  Josiah desired to know the Lord's will concerning the writings and instructed his servants to "enquire of the Lord" (2 Chronicles 34:21).  In turn, the servants speak with the prophetess Huldah, and she prophecies concerning the words written in the book and also provides a beautifully comforting prophecy about King Josiah's future.

Symbolism in Treasure The Word

Huldah is in a rich setting with hanging carpets and a stone enclosure.  Accounts of this prophetess tell us that she lived in the "second quarter" of Jerusalem, an add-on to the city made two centuries earlier during the reign of King Hezekiah.  This residential area (called the mishneh) was near the palace and Solomon's Temple.  Therefore the background of this painting reflects the rich architecture and surroundings possibly part of the second quarter.

The scroll Huldah is reading and the scroll on the table before her represent not only the word of the Lord as revealed through Moses, but all scripture available to us today.  As we "treasure the word" (see JS-Matthew 1:37 and D&C 6:20) we, like Josiah, will be blessed of the Lord.

The water vessel represents the "living water" of truth (see John 4).
