And [the daughters of Zelophehad] stood before Moses...

saying, Our father died in the wilderness...

Why should the name of our father be done away from among his family, because he hath no son?

Give unto us therefore a possession, among the brethren of our father.

And Moses brought their cause before the Lord, And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying, The daughters of Zelophehad speak right: thou shalt surely give them a possession of an inheritance among their father’s brethren...

Numbers 27: 2-7

The story behind The Daughters Of Zelophehad

Mahlah, Milcah, Tirzah, Hoglah, and Noah are five sisters who appeal to Moses for an inheritance in Israel, just prior to the Israel's entry into the Promised Land.  Their father's death in the wilderness left his name without remembrance, and these faithful daughters took their plea to Moses, who in turn inquired of the Lord about the matter.  The Lord grants their petition and these daughters are blessed with an inheritance.  This painting shows three of the daughters inside their tent during the time of the wilderness journey.  (It is clear that the children of Israel used tents for dwellings during the Exodus journey (see Numbers 11:10)).  The girls are eating the manna they have collected that day.  Milcah is seated, enjoying her basket of manna, while Mahlah is offering a bowl to the youngest, Tirzah, who is seated on the floor of their tent.

Symbolism in The Daughters Of Zelophehad

The elements in the painting are carefully chosen to symbolize the inheritance the Lord promises all His faithful children.  Such promises include fruitfulness in lands, fruits, grains, and endeavors, lack of fear, safety, strength, covenant, and the Lord's presence (see Leviticus 26).  In this painting, these promises are represented by several of visual elements.  For example, the large basket at the rear of the painting represents the kind of large storage basket the Lord might have meant when He instructed the Israelites to, "...take of some of the first of all the fruit in the ground...and you shall put it in a basket."  This kind of coiled basket was made using a method dating back to Egypt thousands of years before the daughters of Zelophehad would have lived (Hepper, 174-175).

The smaller baskets held by two of the daughters contain manna, the food provided by the Lord during the 40 year Exodus journey (see Exodus 16:31).  We understand in Exodus 16 that manna represents God's goodness and was used to test the people's obedience.  In a larger sense, this manna symbolizes not only the miraculous power of the Lord to provide for the children of Israel temporally during the Exodus journey, but of the "inheritance" of eternal life prepared by the Savior for the faithful.  In His words, "I go to prepare a place for you" (John 14:2).  The Savior declares in John 6:28-63 that He is the "bread that came down from Heaven".  His Atoning sacrifice made possible the Lord's promise of eternal life (see 2 Nephi 2:25-28), another kind of "inheritance" awaiting the faithful followers of Jesus Christ.

Even the abundant detailing and richness of material within the tent, such as the striped canvas, detailed carpet, and the rich clothing, symbolize the blessings of the Promised Land. The skill with which the embroidery is done on the girls' clothing is a visual reminder of the "needlework" wrought on the hanging for the Tabernacle (see Exodus 26:36).

The strong light cast in the tent is also symbolic of the Savior's presence, for in Leviticus 26:12, He promises: , "And I will walk among you, and will be your God, and ye shall be my people."
