Al Young Studios announces participation in BYU 2008 Education Week

Al Young Studios announced today that it will sell the following prints at the BYU Bookstore during Education Week, August 20 - 22, 2008.
The images will be available as 5 in. x 7 in. prints and 8 in. x 10 in. prints. In addition, one CGI print, I went to hunt beasts in the forests as a 9 in. x 12 in. print, will also be for sale.

These prints will be available for signing by the artists on the 3rd floor of the BYU Bookstore from noon Wednesday through Friday of EDucation Week. The two artists will also participate in the Artwork Unveiling on Wednsday, August 20th, at 10:00AM MDT at the BYU Bookstore. Admission to the unveiling is free.

My Father's Captivity: Japanese POW Camp instructions published

Al Young Studios today announced publication of a 2-page document donated by Walter Regher. The document outlines instructions for the government of Prisoners of War under control of the Empire of Japan. Walter Regher transcribed the document in 1985 and provided Al Young Studios with scans of that transcription. An OCR transcription, which has been verified, is also provided.

Online access to these materials is provided free of charge.

First online installment in the serialized publication of papers in The Wainscott Collection

Seymore Wainscott's Legendary Six Square Cipher is the first Internet publication of a document from The Wainscott Collection.

Thus far, the story of Seymore Wainscott has been told through serialized installments in The Storybook Home Journal. This article features a transcription of an undated document designated by Seymore Wainscott as a Personal Memorandum and entitled A Brief Description Of The Six Square Cipher. In addition to the transcription, the article presents ten facsimiles in Seymore's own hand.

Brigham Young University Window Available

The window, featuring "Y" insignia of Brigham Young University, sells for $325 USD and measures 13.25 in. x 15.25 in. The product is designed to hang from a ceiling or window frame. More information on purchasing or hanging the window is available here.

My Father's Captivity: New Mapping Data

Last evening, Al Young Studios provided a major update to the KML data for the book My Father's Captivity. In this update, more accurate data was added for the geolocation of world War II artifacts.

Regions reciving new geographic data:
  • Clark Field, Mindanao, Philippines
    Each placemark has been moved and overlays of some aerial imagery can be seen in Google Earth.
  • Mindoro, Philippines
    The evacuation of S.S. Mayon at Mindoro was repositioned.
  • The S.S. Panay
    This ship wreckege has been moved to where it is believed that the ship was bombed.
  • Cagayan de Oro, Cagayan, Philippines
    Artifacts from the reteat of American forces have been repositioned here also.
More data and updates for accuracy will occur in the coming weeks. However, some data are approximations and rely on fragmentary recollections of events that may not have been thoroughly documented to begin with.

Minor Update to the Site – 2008-08-01

New Features and Items:
  • Added Navigation Tools and Google Maps to Chapters of My Father's Captivity
    The ability to move from one chapter to the next from within the page has been added, and a Google Maps view of content for each chapter has also been added.
  • New Sorting Ability for Artifacts for My Father's Captivity
    Now documents, photos, and other artifacts may be sorted by people, location, and chapter. In the case of images, if a person is featured in the image, their names are listed, but if it is a document or artifact the provider is listed.
  • Resolved Google Maps CSS Issue
    The CSS for the Google Maps on the site is run by the deafult Google CSS instead of the Al Young Studios CSS.
Resolved Bugs:
  • Resolved JavaScript Error in Archive Document Console
    A JavaScript function prevented the regular view from being toggled after full screen mode was initiated. This issue has been resolve and the Archive Document Console Core version has been changed to 1.0.1.
  • Resolved Google Maps CSS Issue
    The CSS for the Google Maps on the site is run by the default Google CSS instead of the Al Young Studios CSS.

Al Young Studios today added two images to its online archive of original source materials associated with the book My Father's Captivity. This brings the total of available images to 74, or 24 percent of the 310 images to be uploaded over the next few months.

The photos in this batch pertain primarily to the period covered by Chapter 9 of the book, and feature images from Camp Casisang at Malaybalay in the Philippine Islands.

The images are of the camp and a line of soldiers.

Al Young Studios today added seven images to its online archive of original source materials associated with the book My Father's Captivity. This brings the total of available images to 72, or 23 percent of the 310 images to be uploaded over the next few months.

The photos in this batch pertain primarily to the period covered by Chapter 8 of the book, and feature images from the Philippine Islands during the retreat of American forces during between January 1, 1942 and May 9, 1942.

The images feature the Del Monte plantation, the Clark Field Radio Group, the Bugo dock, and the Barricade above Cagayan.
