Last evening, Al Young Studios provided a major update to the KML data for the book My Father's Captivity. In this update, more accurate data was added for the geolocation of world War II artifacts.

Regions reciving new geographic data:

Clark Field, Mindanao, Philippines
Each placemark has been moved and overlays of some aerial imagery can be seen in Google Earth.

Mindoro, Philippines
The evacuation of S.S. Mayon at Mindoro was repositioned.

The S.S. Panay
This ship wreckege has been moved to where it is believed that the ship was bombed.

Cagayan de Oro, Cagayan, Philippines
Artifacts from the reteat of American forces have been repositioned here also.

More data and updates for accuracy will occur in the coming weeks. However, some data are approximations and rely on fragmentary recollections of events that may not have been thoroughly documented to begin with.

Al Young Studios today announced publication of a World War II diary containing more than 450 names of Japanese prisoners of war at Kawasaki Camp 2. The diary, kept by Warren R. Stewart, Jr., and provided by the Warren Stewart Family, contains several rosters for Camp 2.

Stewart recorded not only the names of fellow prisoners, but meticulously documented home addresses, death dates, assignments to camp work details, and other information. In addition to the 450-name roster at the beginning of the notebook, Stewart created or copied several other rosters whose combined total (including duplicate listings) amounts to another 344 names.

The diary is presented as a searchable list of names that lets site visitors go directly to digital copies of the page associated with each name.

"It isn't possible for everyone to hold the original in their hands," explained Al Young, "But these high-resolution images let the very texture of Warren's experience reach out to the viewer. There's a tremendous amount of information here for anyone looking for a father or a grandfather or someone else who endured what these men endured, but there's also a lot to be felt by simply looking at the document. This book survived the bombings that devastated the Yokohama industrial area where the prison camp was located. This book was there when liberation threatened to kill them and the sword of extermination hung over their heads after they’d already survived the long years of starvation, beatings, disease, cruelty, and slavery."

Stewart, a meticulous diarist, kept six diaries during more than three years of captivity. One diary was destroyed during an Allied bombing raid near the end of the war. Of the five other volumes, most of their contents will eventually be published at alyoung.com.

Will Ye Not Now Return Unto Me – The Messiah, by Al Young, is the most recent painting to be completed in the Heroes of the Book of Mormon series. It sells for $5,000. The oil on panel features the advent of the resurrected Savior to the inhabitants of ancient America, as recorded in the Book of Mormon (3 Nephi chapter 9). The painting measures 18 in. x 21 in. and is unframed.

The Heroes of the Book of Mormon is a growing series of artworks being produced by Al Young and Elspeth Young. Currently, the series features paintings of Sariah, Enos, Moroni, Alma the Younger, the Title of Liberty, and the Savior. The collection also includes a series of computer-generated illustrations currently featuring Enos, Alma the Younger, and Moroni.

The project also involves extensive work in producing costumes and accessories, models and miniatures, as well as character sets for writing featured in the artworks. The project has been under way since 2006.

Paintings now in progress include another of the Messiah, as well as a painting and associated images featuring King Benjamin.

For more information, please contact Al R. Today's addition to the site includes not only user interface functionality, but 35 photographs, four more prisoner lists in the archive's library of original documents, and the first in a series of biographical profiles of major characters in the story.

The photographs constitute the complete set of images associated with Chapter 2. Images can be viewed in the newly released Archive Document Console, created by Tanner Young for viewing the archive's collection of documents, images, and artifacts. The detail page for each photograph describes the source, physical description, geographic location of the subject, as well as copyright and usage for the image.

"One of the most exciting features of this update," said Tanner Young, "Is the capability of following the story in Google Earth." Each detail page for an item in the online archive provides KML functionality by which to see a photo or an artifact in geographic context. Whether a visitor comes at the story from the site or from the KML functionality of Google Earth, the items in the online archive are accessible in a global context that relates history to the world today.

The four documents added to the online archive include the roster diary of Warren R. Stewart, Jr., which contains 450 to 700 names. High-resolution images of this 120-page pocket memorandum book can be viewed under the "microscope" of the Archive Document Console. Its contents, painstakingly created during Stewart's time at Kawasaki Camp 2B, contain several prisoner lists for the camp as well as a roster of prisoners assigned to "Squad 6 Section 2" during the voyage of the Tottori Maru. Stewarts annotation of some of the lists include home addresses for the men, death dates, and work-detail assignments.

In addition to the information in the diary, viewing its pages gives visitors the kind of experience usually available only during visits to a records repository. In terms of the story of the Japanese prisoners of war, the nature and size of the document--as well as the manner in which the Console lets visitors view it--provides what may be a unique experience on the Internet, according to author Al Young.

This is the first in the series of Stewart's diaries planned for presentation at alyoung.com. The diaries are being made available to the public because of the generosity of the family of Warren R. Stewart, Jr. Stewart is the subject of the first biographical sketch to be presented on the site, as part of the series that will feature people associated with My Father's Captivity.

Other documents in this site update include a war crimes Exhibit from the papers of John W. Britton, the ranking master sergeant at Camp 2B. This 7-page document lists 139 names, consisting of 59 Americans, 6 members of the British merchant marine, 6 members of the Australian merchant marine, 5 members of the Norwegian merchant marine, 4 British navy personnel, 2 members of the RAF, 13 members of the British army, and 44 men in the Italian navy.

The 35 photographs added to the online archive with this update include 34 images associated with chapter 2 of My Father's Captivity. This collection features snapshots of Alfred R. Young's departure from Tulsa, and the set of pictures he sent home while at Fort McDowell on Angel Island, California.

For more information, please contact Al R.
