Al Young Studios today announced publication of a 2-page document donated by Walter Regher. The document outlines instructions for the government of Prisoners of War under control of the Empire of Japan. Walter Regher transcribed the document in 1985 and provided Al Young Studios with scans of that transcription. An OCR transcription, which has been verified, is also provided.

    The evacuation of S.S. Mayon at Mindoro was repositioned.

    This ship wreckege has been moved to where it is believed that the ship was bombed.
  • Cagayan de Oro, Cagayan, Philippines
    Artifacts from the reteat of American forces have been repositioned here also.
More data and updates for accuracy will occur in the coming weeks. However, some data are approximations and rely on fragmentary recollections of events that may not have been thoroughly documented to begin with.

Al Young Studios today announced publication of a World War II diary containing more than 450 names of Japanese prisoners of war at Kawasaki Camp 2. The diary, kept by Warren R. Stewart, Jr., and provided by the Warren Stewart Family, contains several rosters for Camp 2.

Stewart recorded not only the names of fellow prisoners, but meticulously documented home addresses, death dates, assignments to camp work details, and other information. In addition to the 450-name roster at the beginning of the notebook, Stewart created or copied several other rosters whose combined total (including duplicate listings) amounts to another 344 names.

The diary is presented as a searchable list of names that lets site visitors go directly to digital copies of the page associated with each name.

"It isn't possible for everyone to hold the original in their hands," explained Al Young, "But these high-resolution images let the very texture of Warren's experience reach out to the viewer. There's a tremendous amount of information here for anyone looking for a father or a grandfather or someone else who endured what these men endured, but there's also a lot to be felt by simply looking at the document. This book survived the bombings that devastated the Yokohama industrial area where the prison camp was located. This book was there when liberation threatened to kill them and the sword of extermination hung over their heads after they’d already survived the long years of starvation, beatings, disease, cruelty, and slavery."

Stewart, a meticulous diarist, kept six diaries during more than three years of captivity. One diary was destroyed during an Allied bombing raid near the end of the war. Of the five other volumes, most of their contents will eventually be published at alyoung.com.

The roster includes 139 names consisting of 59 Americans, 6 members of the British merchant marine, 6 members of the Australian merchant marine, 5 members of the Norwegian merchant marine, 4 British navy personnel, 2 members of the RAF, 13 members of the British army, and 44 men in the Italian navy.

Al Young Studios today announced publication of a 3-page document listing 47 prisoner deaths at Kawasaki Camp 2B. According to the document, fifteen men died from various causes between November 12, 1942, and August 25, 1945. Another 14 prisoners are listed as having been killed in the bombing raid of July 25, 1945. Eight men are listed as missing. The last group in the document lists 10 Dutch prisoners who died in the camp from August 1, 1943 to July 2, 1945.

John W. Britton, who participated in the war crimes trials, sent these photocopies to Alfred R. Young nearly 30 years ago. Each page is initialed “JWB.”

Al Young Studios today announced publication of a 1942 roster of prisoners at Casisang near Malaybalay on the island of Mindanao in the Philippine Islands. The 406 names in the roster are divided under the “Honor Roll,” “Personnel Present,” “Personnel Absent,” and names associated with “The Second Prisoner Of War Company.” Information is also provided for each person listed as absent; for example, 1st Lt. Ted B. Fisch is listed as “Missing from a flight Dec 12/41 believed dead.” Departures for Australia are noted with a departure date. Other information is provided, such as “S/Sgt Frederick N. Murillo – Accidentally drowned in Pulangi River Cotebate Province April 7, 1942, near Carmon Ferry.”

An honor roll is presented containing the names of seven members of the 28th Squadron killed in action.

Military organizations represented in the document include Headquarters, Headquarters Squadron, Fifth Air Base Group, 28th Bombardment Squadron, and eight prisoners listed individually as being associated with Infantry, Air Corps, Field Artillery, and Ordnance Corps.

The menu for the prisoners’ celebration days commemoration is also provided, in the style of the printed menus provided at Clark Field for such occasions. Following the menu, detail is provided for the “Official Ration Issue Of The Imperial Japanese Army For Prisoners Of War, Effective 8 September, 1942.”
