Northanger Abbey

What's in this issue?

The Breakfast Room the Decorating article

The search for a more genteel pace and substance to daily life is greatly enhanced by something that was once an essential part of any gentleman's house or any house with such aspirations: The breakfast room. In this installment of Sortybook Decorating, Nancy suggests ways in which the virtues of a breakfast parlour can be re-introduced, without remodeling, to enhance the graciousness and enjoyment of life at home.

A Notion Of Drawing the Hearth article

In this second installment of Particularly for Children: Art Lessons for Beginners, Elspeth introduces the What Did You See Today? Game as well as six exercises: The Crayon-Sketcher's Palette, A Line and Shadow Sampler, Spot the Shapes, Make a Blind-Contour Coloring Book, Make a Ghost, and A Value (Shaded) Drawing.

In Quest Of Pastry, Millinery, And Young Men the Kitchen article

Shop windows along the streets of Bath, beckoning passersby to sample confectionery delights, was the inspiration for this installment of The Kitchen. Recipes include the Bath treats traditionally known as Sally Lunns. Other recipes feature Raspberry and Candied Almond Tart, a 2-minute tart dough that simplifies a savory delicacy like Eggs and Bacon Tart, a sweet version of the dough, and, finally, York Hotel Soup.

To Love A Hyacinth the Garden article

Although the English fought the French by sea and land, in the house and garden the British had little compunction about surrendering to Gallic tastes. In addition to a brief history of the hyacinth, this article features some rare, old varieties to search out for anyone whose "hobby-horse is a garden," though in the sullen days of winter any hyacinth is very easy to love.

A Campaign Breakfast Table the Workshop article

The lightweight campaign-style breakfast table featured in this short article is designed after the manner of a folding campstool, but with stability and charm in mind.

A Journey into the Wilderness the Writer's Garret article

The birth of Seymore and Bryhta's eldest children changes their lives as they shoulder the demands of caring for such a large young family. Seymore does his best to help, but it is Bryhta who willingly bears the brunt of the burden so that he can make the most of opportunities at The College. He gives his best effort, but the climate of insecurity and duplicity among the masters is far greater than he imagines. Not every question, not even a guileless question from a fledgling student, is tolerated. The result is the beginning of a wilderness journey that lasts a lifetime.
