Christmas at Haworth

What's in this issue?

Near Christmas the Decorating article

Everything being in perfect readiness before Christmas may seem impossible, especially where little ones vie with (and often undo) all attempts at order.  So, based on Charlotte's writings, we've come up with a few pocket-sized procedures that may not result in the peak of perfection, but may heighten the comfort and peace of the season without any need to threaten the household or thrash the dog; procedures that can simply keep everyone contentedly near at Christmas.  Headings include: Cleaned Down, To Tuck Them Warmly In, Nighttime Nutmeg Cookies, and Filling the Air With Their Fragrance.

Quite a Treasure the Hearth article

Inspired by the brilliant young Brontës, we share some how-to instructions for designing tiny bits of personal memorabilia in which to scribble the secrets and sentiments of the season, keep track of any essential instructions for Santa or illustrate busy days at the North Pole; and we use the same binding techniques and ideas employed by Charlotte and Branwell.

Deep in Bread-making the Kitchen article

Here are our versions of the delectable breads of Brussels—each delicious enough to be difficult to keep on hand, even when there are no curates coming to tea—and designed to create their own reasons for calling people home, while keeping the family baker delightfully deep in bread-making.  Recipes include: Pistolets (Little Pistols), Pains à la grecque (Little Greek Breads), Craqueline, The Art of the Tartine, Breakfast Tartine Bar, Lunch or supper, Onion Confiture.

Music I Love, But Never Strain the Music article

We offer a list of simple and advanced piano duets that can be played on quiet December mornings (if such a thing still exists) for solace, contemplation or entertainment—or for occupying overexcited little ones daunted by the interminable wait for gifts on Christmas morning. Featured composers include: Balakiriev, Beethoven, d'Albert, Dvorak, Hummel, Grieg, Liszt, Massenet, Mendelssohn, Rachmaninoff, Rubinstein, Saint-Sa^euml;ns, Scharwenka, and Schubert.

Of Everlasting Flowers the Garden article

Perhaps no flowers betoken the mixture of hardiness and delicacy more completely than the everlasting flowers Charlotte mentioned in her novels.  Though, you may not have them for this Christmas, you may, like Emily, create next year's Eden in your mind, as you spend the wintry weeks planning the spring garden, and even start it from seed or cuttings.  And no need to write Ellen Nussey, we give some planting tips for them right here.

In Gilt Frames the Workshop article

This installment of the Workshops presents an idea for homemade Christmas tree ornaments reminiscent of the gilt frames that would have set off Helen Graham's paintings.

The Song of Ishanor, part 1 the Writer's Garret article

Like the Lay of Lunta, published in the 2015 Christmas issue of The Storybook Home Journal, The Song of Ishanor is another myth from The Isles of Rune, which Seymore Wainscott created for the delight of his children.  This myth is presented in two parts, of which this installment of the Writer's Garret is the first.  The youth Ishanor is the central character in this story of devotion and heroism.
