We do not all live in centuries-old, vernacular artworks—however desirable and romantic that might be. We can, however, learn from and emulate some of the precepts that make home into a refuge, a wonder and a delight by making apparent there some of the bits of heaven that are "there about us always." Headings include: Living in a Living Home, Purifying, Nourishing, Blessing, and Layering.
Elspeth presents a few of her own tips, secrets and techniques for finding safe passage through the narrows of painting with gouache. Headings include About Gouache, Safety and Clean-up, Paints, Brushes, Papers, and Palette. Exercises include Rainbow flower watercolor with gouache, Alla prima gouache, layered gouache, and earth-tone portrait.
Plopping down two Jesuits from the heart of France into a land flowing with fiery beans and overcooked mutton appears to have given Willa and her European-friendly palate yet another hybrid to expound upon and—pardon the pun—to truly relish. Perhaps she imagined her own French cook faced with the dilemma of to how to cope under the circumstances; or perhaps as she camped and dined throughout the Southwest, she dearly wished she’d packed her French chef in her extra duffel. Recipes include: Mushroom and Chicken Enchiladas, Squash Enchiladas, Pecos Crown, Plateau Gateau, and Petit Burros.
Willa described Don Antonio Olivares "a man who cherished his friends. He liked to call at the Bishop's house to advise him about the care of his young orchard, or to leave a bottle of home-made cherry brandy for Father Joseph." We wanted to discover what of his advice might be of the type that might spread beyond the canopy of the orchard and into any garden—whether growing apples and apricots, arugula and asparagus, or aquilegia and asters. Headings include: Fillers and Distribution.
In the spirit of the descriptions in Cather's novel, here is a quick look at some ornaments—shaped like the folk art of Father Latour's native France, saturated in the color scheme of the Southwest, and embellished with motifs from Auvergne, executed in gouache.
Following the sundering of the Winding Sea, Ishanor drifts alone for many days upon the open seas. Greywing and the Peoples of the Wind care for him until the winds bring him to the perilous passage of the Swirling Seas surrounding the remnants of the Far Isles.
