Carl and Karin Larsson have had a profound influence on our effort to make and keep a home. In the hope that it might help in finding one's “own comfortable home waiting 'round the bend,” as Carl described it, this installment presents a few ideas from Lilla Hyttnäs that have stood the test of time in making home a little more like Eden.
Here we present some classics of Julafton fare (a few of which are also the treats handed out by Lucia) given a Storybook Home Journal twist. They are all easy to prepare ahead and some are just plain easy. Still others can readily be replaced by a right-and-good substitute so that a Julbord feast can be set out in the twinkling of a tomte's eye. Recipes include: Suzanne's Saffron Bread, Julbord Beet Salad, Julbord Carrot Salad, Julafton Ham, Right & Good Sauce, Broths and Sauces, Esbjorn's Glogg, Brita's Limpa Bread, Pepparkakor (Spice cookies), Pepparkaka (Ginger Snap Cake).
After describing the Swedish celebration of St. Lucia Day, this installment of the Garden presents suggestions for adopting this delightful way of beguiling away a day or two during the Christmas season; a tradition that the fond-of-dress-up Larsson family cheerfully adopted.
This selection from the mythical stories Seymore Wainscott created for his children describes the way the greatfolc and the lytfolc lived and worked together in a world in which everything was alive, even the earth and the stars, with whom the Children of the Stars were friends.
