The work of artists whose interests draw them toward line as a means of expression has always delighted me, but my own interests invariably drew me toward tone instead.  I came to realize that were I to pursue line, I would have to study idiom and technique before I could express the subject; indeed, before I could even discover my own artistic identity in terms of line and then complete the long and arduous journey toward mastery... By Al R. Young Beginning with its July 1997 issue, Victoria Magazine (published by the Hearst Corporation) embarked upon a three-part series of excerpts from The Country of the Pointed Firs by Sarah Orne Jewett.  The first installment in this series featured five of Al's signed and numbered lithographs from the Studios' Limited Edition Fine Art Collection.

The following pencil drawing (not part of the Studios' commercial portfolio) also accompanied the installment as an illustration... Read more »

Limited Edition Prints: Lithographic fine art printing process

By Al R. Young
The following photographs summarize the lithographic printing process by which Al R. Young and W. Wayne Kimball collaborated to produce 55 of the limited edition prints available from Al Young Studios.  Wayne also collaborated with Ashton Young to produce a limited-edition of prints in 1999.
Limestone slabs, quarried in Bavaria, serve as the printing element, placed in the press bed, from which the prints were made.  Each stone weighs approximately 100 lb., is 3 in. thick, and has a drawing surface measuring 16 in... Read more »

Limited Edition Prints: Edition 1 published

By Al R. Young
The images for this edition (these editions) of original lithographs were hand-drawn by the artist on a single Bavarian limestone.  Processing, proofing, and printing were done by hand by Wayne Kimball in Pleasant Grove, Utah.  Trial proofing took place in early summer, and edition printing was completed in late July 1996.
This edition is comprised only of the impressions enumerated in the following table.  (The numbers are identical for all three images.)  All other impressions have been destroyed... Read more »
