Now, what do we hear in the gospel which we have received? A voice of gladness! A voice of mercy from heaven; and a voice of truth out of the earth; glad tidings for the dead; a voice of gladness for the living and the dead; glad tidings of great joy. How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of those that bring glad tidings of good things, and that say unto Zion: Behold, thy God reigneth!....Let the mountains shout for joy, and all ye valleys cry aloud; and all ye seas and dry lands tell the wonders of your Eternal King! And ye rivers, and brooks, and rills, flow down with gladness. Let the woods and all the trees of the field praise the Lord; and ye solid rocks weep for joy! And let the sun, moon, and the morning stars sing together, and let all the sons of God shout for joy! And let the eternal creations declare his name forever and ever! And again I say, how glorious is the voice we hear from heaven, proclaiming in our ears, glory, and salvation, and honor, and immortality, and eternal life; kingdoms, principalities, and powers!

Doctrine and Covenants 128:19-23

The story behind The Dawning Of A Brighter Day

In 1820, Joseph Smith's recourse to the Bible, in search of the answer to his question about religion (Joseph Smith - History 1:5-12), was an early manifestation of the pattern of a lifetime of inquiry.  His consummate and perpetual blending of study and faith was not just the means by which he obtained an answer to that early question, but the means by which he obtained answers to all of his questions.  It was the pattern by which he laid the foundation of the great latter-day restoration (Acts 3:21, Ephesians 1:10).

Symbolism in The Dawning Of A Brighter Day

The painting is therefore an allegory presenting the nature and substance of the dispensation coming in the chariots of the sky as the Powers of Heaven draw back the oppressive curtains of the ages.  And as truth and righteousness come down from Heaven, so it also rises from the earth (Psalm 85:11), symbolized by the fountain-blossoming of the tree, also symbolic of that fruit which is precious above all (Jacob 5:74).  And the old barriers that have kept the world divided and oppressed—-barriers represented by the open gate, the dilapidated fence, the unpruned bracken under the tree, and even the dappled shadows that have moved away from the figure since he sat down to read in the shade—are no match for the brighter day dawning upon the world ("The Morning Breaks," Hymns no. 1, 1985).
