The story behind That Good Part

In the Bible accounts of Luke and John, the reader sees Mary of Bethany, a devoted disciple of the Lord.  She chooses "that good part" (Luke 10:42) that is available to all.  It is her discipleship that is the inspiration for this simple portrait.  Her purposeful gaze speaks of her faith and understanding.

Symbolism in That Good Part

The design depicted in Mary’s clothing is the artist’s interpretation of the white mustard seed plant (Sinapis alba).  Not only is this plant native to Palestine, the Savior uses this herb to illustrate the power of faith--that "nothing shall be impossible unto you" (see Matthew 17:20).  It is this kind of faith that Mary displays when she [sits] at his feet and [hears] his word, or when she anoints the Savior’s feet "against the day of [his] burying…" (Luke 10:39 and John 12:3,7).
