But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.

John 4:14

The story behind Living Water

This painting depicts the Samaritan woman at the well after Christ has testified to her of His identity as Savior and Redeemer.  He offers her "living water" (truth) that will always sustain and strengthen.  In this painting, she stands, facing the viewer, ready to offer this same truth, or living water.  We know the woman shared her testimony of the Savior to those of her village (John 4:39-42), and she symbolically does the same for us.

Symbolism in Living Water

The setting is inspired by a nineteenth century photograph of Jacob’s well, at the base of Mount Gerizim, the same place the woman meets Christ in the account of John (John 4:5). The woman’s water jug is empty, representing the Savior’s promise to her that she will "never thirst" if she receives the water that Christ only can provide (John 4:14).
