Before. The firebox is hidden by the pressboard. The box was later reoriented in the nearby corner of the room. The space above the interior drywall, and under the ridge of the roof, was turned into a playroom.
Al designed motifs for the fireplace facade and other features in the remodeling, so as to feature civic heraldry important in the family heritage of the patrons.
Elements of the bas relief were prepared in the workshop.
The shield to be featured in the fireplace facade was created by hand and textured in the workshop to minimize on-site assembly and finishing of the feature.
Al designed and built this part of the fireplace facade to cover an air intake vent required for the loft playroom. This unit was textured in the shop and a cast-iron grate was installed in its aperture.
This detail of the finished fireplace shows Al's design and rendering of the firebox-surround installed at the firebox.
